The Rules of Farkle
  • First one to 10,000 or more wins, unless one or more of the remaining players can top the score in one more turn. (Winner would have highest final score)
  • You must score with every roll, taking at least one scoring die out of each turn before re-rolling
  • You must score at least 750 to 'get on the board'.. after that the minimum score is 350
  • Keep rolling and taking out your choice of one or more scoring dice until rolling without scoring (a farkle). A farkle ends the turn and all accumulated score from that turn is lost
  • If all six dice eventually score, you may start rolling with all 6 again, keeping that turn's accumulated score.
  • Once you reach the minimum score, you may stop at any time. You must stop before farkling to receive the score of that turn.

Scoring: (use 6 dice.. 3 of one color, 3 of another color)

  • 1 = 100 5 = 50
  • Triple: 100 X number (e.g.: 3 5's = 500)
  • Triple exception #1: if all 3 of one number in one color, score 200 X number (eg: 3 red 5's = 1000)
  • Triple exception #2: 3 1's=1000. 3 1's of one color = 2000
  • If you roll any triple, you have to count them and remove those dice from the active dice
  • If a roll of 6 dice creates a 'straight' (1 2 3 4 5 6) score = 1500. Roll again! (if you dare)
  • NOTE: you cannot combine scores from different rolls to make a larger roll score. For example, if a 5 is thrown in the first roll and removed from the active dice as a score of 50, and then 2 more 5's are rolled in the next turn, the player can't make this a triple and score 500. The score at this point would be 150. Triples and straights must be rolled in one roll.
  • The “Vant Hof 6” (not yet accepted by all of Portland)
Accumulating 6 ones scores 3000: player forfeits other point totals created by rolling the 1's when taking the score of 3000.
  • Dissolving Rule (new option)
Before every game of farkle, the group decides on an arbitrary rule that will be in effect for that game only. For example, a 6 dice farkle could result in subtracting 500 points from the player's score. (ouch.) You could also decide on adding 500 points.. or make other advantages, disadvantages for other roll combinations. Or make a drinking game.
  • At an unofficial meeting of the OFA (9/01), we agreed to retain the rule requiring a player to score a triple 2 (rather than being required to always score any triple). We also agreed that a player is not required to roll the dice again when all 6 score (this had been under contention for some time).

Favorite Farkle Sayings

  • “Lunch box” or “Lunch bucket”: This is shorthand for an analogy to the “blue collar” approach of working hard for your score (e.g., accumulating 200 with 3 dice).
  • “You've just taken a hard suck on the farcicle”
  • “sexfarkle”: a six dice farkle
  • “Heart farkitations” are experienced when re-rolling after scoring all 6 dice, and thinking (falsely) that you have just farkled.
  • “Premature farkulation” happens if you go sailing out in front of the crowd, only to stall out around 9,000 or so.
